| Les Preludes,
Mosaics of a Musician's Life
Maestro Gati's Autobiography
Les Preludes of Franz Liszt became a kind of leitmotif
of Maestro Gatis life. Maestro Gati decided at the tender
age of nine to become a conductor when he heard the last few bars
of Les Preludes.
"What is life but a succession of preludes?" Alphonse
de Lamartin
While the book is mainly an autobiography, it looks at many tumultuous
world events that took place during more than seventy years (1925
to 2004). It covers music and musicians, the art of performing,
chronicling the personal experiences of being the citizen of three
different countries and experiencing world events that have shaped
the history of the 20th Century. Maestro Gati recounts his personal,
intimate experiences of working with many world renown artists such
as Ferras, Lympany, Menuhin, Rampal, Ricci, Rostropovich, Segovia,
Starker, Siki, Yepes, and Zabaletta.
Praise for Les
Preludes
Your book is WONDERFUL!! I'm enjoying reading it from the beginning
in a continuous flow. What a life you've had! I'm glad you put it
out for people to share and enjoy. If any field in the music world
is more difficult to survive in than jazz it's being a symphony
conductor. My hat's off to you.

I am totally fascinated by "Les Preludes" I find it an
EXTRAORDINARY book. We savor it very much, because it is extremely
interesting and because it is part of my life and you are part of

I'm continuing to read your book, and I find it more and more interesting
from a musical and human point of view. Perhaps it is helping me
to have a better relation with myself and music!
Thank you, Laszlo.

I found your book fascinating. It reads like a novel and I frequently
had to ignore my wife's calls to bed to find out what happened next. You've
certainly crammed more into your lifetime than any ten people I
know.
